A day to remember

November 4, 1966 is a day Venetians, and Venice, will never forget.  I thought I'd share this little video to give you an idea of what it was like, if you have not already seen photos from 1966.

We had a little bit of Aqua Alta today, and tomorrow the forecast is 105 centimeters.  Just a dribble compared to this day in 1966!

Karen,

I remember when this same storm hit Florence I had just finished reading the Agony and the Ecstasy so was very "into" Florence at the time. I remember sending money to the relief fund for the Florentines...but I never realized at the time that Venice was effected. Venice was not even on my radar at that time. Now after my many visits to Venice (and experiencing Acqua Alta to a certain extent) I realize3 how devastating it was. I even have seen signs along some of the canals indicating the height of the water.
Fingers crossed here for you Venetians that this year's Acqua Alta is not terrible.

Ciao

Thank you for such an excellent article Karen. Let's hope the water never reaches the heights is did in 1966!
