We've moved from Baltimore, Maryland USA to Venice, Italy in pursuit of living our dream!

It's Venice, it's winter, and it's time to go to the market.

In Venice for a winter holiday and can't decide what to wear to go to Rialto market?  Here's just a handful of the fur choices seen yesterday.

Mostardo, an Italian fruit and mustard condiment, typically served with boiled meats,  consists of fruits preserved in a syrup mixed with either powdered mustard seed or mustard essence. The one shown above  is in the window of one of my favorite shops,  Drogheria Moscari, a wonderful old grocery  located on Calle degli Spezieri in the San Polo district, very close to the Rialto bridge.

This Babbo Natale wasn't wearning any fur, but how could I resist?

Our Italian word of the day is pelliccia- fur coat.

We need to get our fur coats, Karen. At least nice faux ones before I return for another winter in Venice. I'm watching my sale catalogs.
It was so lovely to spend so much time with both of you. Enjoy your fish tonight and your turkey domani.
Buon Natale,
Michelle

A Venetian friend of ours has three fur coats - the one she wore to the market, the short one for acqua alta and the third for going to the Fenice, etc. Don't you love it.
Karen: thank you so much for your blog and the wonderful posts. I always compliment you on your writing and have to repeat myself: everything is so readable. Having stopped going to Venice (or anywhere) after 25 years, I hang on to your posts and feel bereft when there is a big gap. I can well imagine you have other things to do with your life but your blog is giving a lot of folks a lot of pleasure.

Buon Natale, Karen e Mike. Thanks for explaining what mostardo is!

I wonder if you'd see such a high concentration of fur coats in other Italian cities? And, I love it, when by some inner compass, these ladies all seem to change over to cashmere at about the same time.

No need for the fur coats in Dismal Swamp. :-)

Yvonne- Buon Natale!!! Yes, fur coats are all over Italy, Venice is no exception- at least that's been my observation over the last few years. Hope you have a wonderful holiday! I'm looking forward to seeing you here soon. Where are you staying this time?

Michelle- the problem is I want a real one, but can't justify spending that kind of money, even if they are warmer than anything else in the world.

Christmas fresh turkey was fabulous, just finished eating. Hope you had a great day too!
