A blog post coincidence

Earlier today I wrote a blog about what happens when Aqua Alta gets inside your apartment.  After posting my entry, I went out walking, ended up in St. Mark' s square around 3pm, and guess what I saw?  You guessed it- Aqua Alta today just outside the church entrance.

Well there goes my belief that aqua alta only came in the winter. Must have been some very high tides.

Diane- it's not just in the winter, it's been happening other times for several years now, but mostly only in St. Mark's, as that is the lowest point in the city. They weren't exceptionally high tides yesterday either, just enough to put water on the street at the Basilica. It happened a few days last week also. Bring boots!!!

Oh I have negotiated St. Mark's during acqua alta last October because I had an assignment to take a picture of a particular shop. I thought that the raised areas next to the shops would not have any water over them -- ha ha, that was a joke. I got some great pictures of people trying to wade through. I knew that it would go down in about an hour or so, so I just went to lunch. When I came back, no problem getting to take my picture. My guess is that the AA at this time of the year does not really last long nor will it in September. If worse comes to worse, I will buy Wellies. I am staying in Campo Sta. Margherita again.

Dianne- Are you at the same little apartment next to the Carmini? It's been behind scaffolding for several months already, no sign of when it might be completed. They just completed work on the street right in front of the door there, they put in new large pipes underground. Plan on boots! See you in September!!

Hi!

If you're talking about the same apartment building, I heard from my landlady that they still haven't had approval for the works on the apartment building! So, the scaffolding, etc., could be there for quite a while.

Ciao, Yvonne. Thanks so much for the update on the apt. building. Yes, it's the same one!

G’day
Read your blog and was thinking about coincidence and alta aqua. Had to rush, no time to comment. Into city, 3 hours later back home via underground. Jumped off at Kings Cross and railway folk everywhere, 10-15 of them, water too ... flooding throughout the platforms. Ride up the escalator more railway staff ... more flooding through the turnstiles and across the entire station entrance. Not quite alta aqua, because this isn't Venice in winter, but an interesting coincidence … yes?
cheers

Every time we visit Venice we agree that we will buy Venetian wellies if we need them and consequently have a lovely reminder every time we wear them. But, disappointingly, we have not had to do so! We have seen AA but not very high ones. I am pining at the moment as I don't know when we will next be visiting Venice :-(

I'll have a little fund for buying Venetian wellies when I come in 2012. I had a bit of it when I was there in 2008. My apartment came equipped with several sizes and I tried and one pair actually fit me. But I'd like to try some of those multicolored ones.
Ah, July 10 and thanks to our June Gloom I have finally planted up the pots on my deck. It's lovely out there. Not quite warm enough for dinner though...not tonight.
Ciao!
